On Wednesday we had transfers. Elder Fagan and I went to the Provo Temple before transfers.... After that, we ran over to the mission office.... At the mission office, I picked up a package for ... my new companion. It was from his mom.... I gave it to him at transfers. He was quite surprised.
On Sunday, we went to church in Eagle Mountain. That ward broke 500 this week.... everyone has to squeeze in the chapel, overflow, and the first section of the gym. It looks more like some sort of concert in a major city than a church service!
It was a really funny sacrament meeting. There was a dad and his little girl, about two years old, sitting in front of us. Her mom was the chorister. She did just fine for most of the meeting without mom, and then she snapped or something. She saw her mom up there and left the pew and took off running towards the stand. She just bolted up to the front. Her dad was right behind her, until he caught her and brought her back to the bench.
The last speaker went just a little long with his talk. At about ten minutes after two, his little son, who looked like he was about five, came running up front from somewhere in the congregation and walked right up to his dad. He then said, in a voice loud enough for the microphone to pick up, "Hey Dad! It's time!" Then he ran back to his seat. That was hilarious!
Sunday night, we ate dinner with an American family. We met them on Wednesday night, when we were over at the stake center in Saratoga Springs. The wife met us and asked us when we could eat with them, because they used to have the missionaries over all the time when they lived in California. So we ate with them yesterday. When we got to the house, I noticed a picture on their wall of the husband on the front of a Southern Pacific locomotive. Sister Huggins, the wife, explained that he is an engineer. Just then he walked out and introduced himself. He explained that he used to work for the SP, and later the UP after they merged. He said they moved here and now he runs the California Zephyr to Grand Junction, CO, once a week, and to Winnamucca, NV, once a week. That was an interesting dinner. I mentioned to him that he basically has the job I want to have, and he explained that they will be looking to hire more conductors and engineers out of Salt Lake in about a year, because they are restarting another train out of SLC. It is the old Pioneer, which will run from Denver to SLC to Portland to Seattle. |
